Roads Corporation of Victoria

Callsign:  VZ3MT

All of the country regions are on the VicGov SMR network (what's let of them anyway) and only a few of the vehicles (mainly the road gangs) have radios in them.  The most common radio in use back then (and still is now) is the Phillips FM 900 series radio in both local and remote versions. The country repeaters also had a TARA interface system in use as well.

*Vic Roads do not manage traffic on the City Link sections of the Monash & Tullamarine Freeways. This is done by City Link’s own staff.

Eastern Fwy depot numbers are allocated on a personal basis i.e. the numbers are allocated to a specific individual

Transport Safety Service (TSS) cars-the ones with the magenta light bars-are usually on the VicGov Telstra SmartNet SMR network but occasionally use 462.6250 MHz (ch 58 on VicRoads Phillips FM900 radios).

The following no longer exist Line marking, Asphalt, Materials, Workshops (they were privatised and became AH Plant Hire .They since lost the contract for the supply and maintenance of VicRoads trucks etc to Porter Plant Pty Ltd, who do use radio. VicRoads Internal Departments of, Survey, Auto Grade group etc have gone from the radio system as well although they still exist within VicRoads

Note also that VicRoads is responsible for maintaining major roads only, such as Bell St, Westall Rd, Dandenong Rd, Ring Road, Freeways. Your local street and any roads VicRoads are not responsible for are the responsibility of your local council. Your council will employ or sub-contract it’s own road maintenance gang.

Bitumen resurfacing crews now come under a separate company called Sprayline. They have their own allocations of three state wide UHF frequencies, plus can use the VicGov SMR. In Melbourne and Country Vic, another company does road maintenance for the local council roads under contract called Quality Roads (My uncle works for them and they are based in Drouin, but do all road work for Nillumbik Shire here in Melbourne!!)

Nearly all road maintenance in Metropolitan Melbourne, and a fair bit of country Victoria is done by contractors.

A big thanks to “The Road Worker” for supplying this information

Vic Roads responded to just over 200,000 calls last year via the Traffic Control Centre.

Traffic Control Officer Ron Winn is the man in charge at the Vic Roads Communications Centre

In Melbourne it is mostly the IMT who still use radio.
