1.
At four (4) minutes prior to a frequency opening (always
just prior to the hour, i.e. 0356), Waltzing Matilda is played on the
frequency that is about to open and transmit English language Radio Australia.
2.
The laugh of a kookaburra is played on frequencies four (4) minutes prior when a foreign language
broadcast of Radio Australia is about to begin.
3.
Radio Australia can also be identified on the hour, when the
usual ABC radio news tune is played. (As played by Metro & regional ABC
Stations)
4.
All of the ABC’s SW transmitters (7) are located at
Shepparton, Victoria. If you live in or near Shepparton a scanner and a
rubber-ducky antenna will provide excellent reception. Outside Shepparton,
normal SW antennas (a length of wire out the window etc) will need to be used.
All transmit with an output of 100 watts.
5.
Foreign Language broadcasts information available on
request. (If enough emails received, then they will be added to site) at ageelan@bigpond.com
6.
Don’t forget to send reception reports (qsl cards) to the
ABC, as if we don’t let stations know that we listen, then we risk losing that
shortwave service. (Due to few Australians lisening, RA has already closed it’s
Darwin, Brandon and Longreach antenna sites, leaving only Shepparton, and one
must wonder how long before it too is closed forever, spelling the end of Radio
Australia, so if you listen, please email RA and let them know you’re
listening.
