The EC-130 Command Solo Unit of the US Air Force is responsible for transmitting pictures and sound (TV and Radio) into areas it is about to attack. This unit was deployed during the Afghan war to tell Afghanis how America was going to liberate them, and has again being deployed to Iraq.

The same is now happening in Iraq. The US military dropped millions of leaflets over Iraq detailing these frequencies and what times to listen in late December 2002.  Currently they are broadcasting anti-Saddam messages, Arabic music, and again how they plan to liberate Iraq. It is expected these broadcasts will cease when war is declared, just as it did in Afghanistan.

Clearly, you can see the EC 130’s role is to tell civilians of a country prior to war they are about to attack, put simply, it is US propaganda, in much the same way as various countries used short wave during World War II.

The transmissions start at 0200 (2am) Australian Summer Time and end at 0900 (9am) Australian Summer Time. These are high-powered broadcasts and should be audible around the world and are broadcast from the EC-130’s C-130 Hercules Aircraft (which literally is a plane that can broadcast propagnda etc ‘over the top’ of other transmissions. So if we were at war with the US, they could fly overhead and broadcast their propaganda right over our TV, radio on whatever frequency they like, say Channel 7 or 3AW, could be drowned out by these broadcasts.

Remember you’ll need either a scanner or Short Wave radio with SSB (LSB & USB) modes, and in the case of a scanner, frequencies between 4 to 15MHz. Steps of 5KHz or less . (The smaller the step, the more you can fine tune reception, with the exception of scanners with a BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) that work in the same way as a clarifier/slider on 27MHz CB and don’t need step adjustment for fine tuning.
