Local Area Patrol Notes:

LAP callsigns always start with a police station name, (eg Albury 21-a patrol panel van in Albury; Hornsby 212-a highway patrol sedan from Hornsby police station). There is an exception in that some callsigns (mostly outer Metro Sydney) police vehicles use “Kilo 203”- a highway patrol car in NSW ‘K” district, which is actually a regional, and not a LAP callsign. Either way, you’ll here almost all callsigns begin within either a station, district or region name.

Patrol Commander {Snr Sgt-small patrols to Superintendent-large patrols}: Manages the patrols, provides leadership and ensures adequate supervision, training and career development of officers under their command.

Patrol Tactician {Snr Sgt to Inspector}: Identifies issues, criminal activity and community concerns. Helps plan operations and co-ordinates a local ‘crime response’

Station Controller {Snr Sgt to Inspector}: Day to day station duties, cor-ordinates and supervises each station shift.

Chief Of Detectives {Snr Sgt t Inspector}: Directs and controls all major patrol investigations.

Senior Patrol Investigator {Constable to Sgt}: Leads investigations and helps identify ‘problem’ areas

Shift Supervisor {Sgt}:  Allocates officers and duties according to assessment of current needs and identifies the shift requirements of each patrol.

Beats Supervisor {Snr Constable to Sgt}:  Coaches officers to solve local problems within their beat area and keeps the public informed of local police activity.

Highway Patrol Supervisor {Snr Constable to Snr Sgt}:  Attends most major incidents, supervises the use of radar, speed camera, VIP escort, breath testing and all other functions of the highway patrol officers under his/her command.

Highway Patrol Constable {Constable to Snr Constable}: Responsible for road safety and the free movement of traffic. Provide assistance and support to general duties police where required.

Patrol Supervisor-Traffic Services {Snr Constable to Sgt}: Attends major traffic incidents and participate in traffic management committee within local community. Responsible for motor vehicle accident records

Beat/Foot Patrol Constable {Constable to Snr Constable}: Patrols a ‘beat area’ within local patrol area and works with public to reduce street crime and criminal activity. They identify problem areas and pass this information to the Intelligence Officer.

General Duties Constable {Constable to Snr Constable}: Responds to local incidents such as car accidents, burglaries, domestic violence, drunks, noise complaints, lost children and other criminal activities.

Station Officer {Constable to Snr Constable}: Ensures the safety and welfare of prisoners in police custody at station holding cells. Organizes the transfer of these prisoners to/from mainstream prison and/or court appearances as well as handle general public enquires made to the station by phone or in person.

Sector Supervisor {Constable to Sgt}: In charge of a specific area of patrol.

Patrol Education & Development Officer {Constable to Sgt}: Liases with Patrol Command(er) and Police Academy staff on training and development of officers under his/her command.

Intelligence Officer {Snr Constable to Sgt}: Collates and analyses crime trends, this information is then provided to officers of the local patrol.

Regional Notes:

Regional callsigns use a region name as the prefix [Region]. Eg Macquarie 211 is a highway patrol sedan in Macquarie district. Some departments now simply use “Dog” followed by unit number for a K9 unit or “Crash” for accident attending officers. Sometimes officers will use these callsigns, other times they will use local area or the old callsigns, this is due to an industrial dispute within the NSW Police Service, but they will use one or the other, or it will b quite clear who and what they are.
