What Do The “Feds” Do?

The investigation and prevention of crime against the Commonwealth and protection of Commonwealth interests in Australia and overseas by enforcing Commonwealth laws and protect the integrity of Commonwealth programs; effectively contributing to international efforts to counteract and prevent criminal activities identified by the Government; protect the integrity of national economic and social institutions and the environment;  and to ensure there is a national response where criminal activity impinges on national security and/or is of a trans-jurisdictional character;

The Federal Police also provide Protective Services (Bodyguards) to Politicians, VIPs, etc.

They provide close personal protection to high office holders assessed as being at threat; administer the National Witness Protection Program; and with strategic partners, plan and co-ordinate for special events; with other agencies, prevent or investigate politically motivated violence;

Overseas the AFP provide

An effective contribution and response to international law enforcement efforts; provide an effective contribution to Australia’s international peacekeeping/ monitoring commitments; provide community policing services to the Commonwealth’s external territories; and contribute to the institutional strengthening of the criminal justice systems of Asia and the Pacific.

In The Australian Capital Territory, the Federal Police are also the State Police whose role it is to create of a safe and secure environment in the Australian Capital Territory.

The AFP provides community policing services to the ACT community under contract with the ACT Government. The objectives of this outcome are defined by the Purchase Agreement between the AFP and the ACT Government for the provision of police services and is renegotiated annually. The current objectives are to ensure: a level of public order and community confidence which enables people to go safely about their lawful pursuits; the incidence and impact of crime are minimised through effective investigations; road safety is maximised in the ACT; the adverse impact of public emergencies/disasters and risk associated with major events is limited; prosecution and judicial processes are effectively supported; and that the regulatory requirements and information needs of clients are satisfied.
