These frequencies are used when an aircraft is beyond the range of VHF communications to communicate with Air Traffic Control (ATC), almost all aircraft rely on HF radio at some point during their flight. VHF is useless unless the plane is within ‘line of sight’ to the tower to which it needs to communicate with. It is mostly aircraft positions and weather reports that will be heard on these frequencies, but the RAAF will be heard here also from time to time! It is en-route radiotelephony networks serving the Major World Air Route Areas (MWARAS) of the world.
